Where it all started - Generation 7

Generation 7 - December 2016

We added the electrical control panel for automation of lighting and watering of each shelf. We also added 6500K and 5000K LED Strip Lights at 8.5" above the grow pad and continued to look for ways to improve the yield and growth rate.

Nutrients to every shelf was supplied from its own pump. The plumbing for this was unnecessarily complex.

Experimentation with different nutrients started and data was collected for every tray grown.

1mm polyester grow mats were rejected after several trays with mature microgreens dried out within 12 hours.

Watering twice a day was more productive but still caused some issues with mold. Fans were added to improve airflow and GSE (Grapefruit Seed Extract) was added to the nutrients to try to reduce mold.

Key factors affecting yield:

  • Oxygenation of water
  • Nutrients
  • Airflow
  • Lighting duration
What found no significant difference with lighting temperatures.
